Richard Clayderman | Piano Solo
France's most internationally successful recording artist, pianist Richard Clayderman rose to great popularity on the strength of his soothing and romantic light classical music. Born Philippe Pages in Paris in 1954, he was the son of a piano teacher, and enrolled at the prestigious Conservatoire at the age of 12, winning first prize just four years later. Clayderman went on to work as a bank clerk, but eventually signed with the Delphine label to record "Ballade Pour Adeline," which sold several million copies in Europe.Throughout the 1970s his fame grew, aided by his collaborations with French pop performers including Johnny Hallyday and Michel Sardou; by the early 1980s, he was touted as France's best-selling performer. In 1982 Clayderman stormed the U.S. and Britain, issuing a collection titled The Music of Richard Clayderman, which, thanks to a highly successful television advertising campaign, went on to sell millions of copies on both sides of the Atlantic. Recording well over 100 albums (most of them combining new material with recycled tracks from earlier efforts), he counted some 60 million records sold worldwide at the time of an early-1990s tally, an easy-listening cottage industry unto himself. ~ Jason Ankeny, All-Music Guide.
