Fatboy Slim | Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars
Not too long ago, we were all reciting the Right about now Rockafeller chant, and before he gives us a chance to forget his existence, Norman Cook springs on us a musical surprise too good to resist. After all, we are talking about a man who is at the forefront of the Big Beat movement, a man whose existence has superceded a decade. (15 years, actually)
The former Housemartin member, and face behind a slew of aliases, works with a singer in this album, a first for his career. Macy Gray's vocals are featured on Love Life and Demons while Sunset (Bird of Prey) is big sampling news, bringing stunning, panoramic grooves to the late Jim Morrison's lyrics.
The soundscape of Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars is superbly muscular; and for someone extremely familiar with 'cut-and-paste' style, this challenging album is one worth a listen.
