John the Whistler | It's Crazy
Yup, you got the title right - It's Crazy, and it drives this writer crazy as well. This unique 12-track dance CD features the project of Umberto Carli, who spearheads and runs the project. Born in Africa during the '60s, but his family relocated to Belgium while he was a child, where he drove his elementary teacher crazy with his love of whistling.
After being fired from the army at the age of 18, he then began to spread his demos among record companies, who loved his melodies, which combined words with a unique blend of fast beats and whistling. His first single, “I'm In Love”, has slammed into the charts of Denmark, Norway, Germany and Israel, and his follow up, “Tell Me”, threatens to do the same.
While the idea is very unique and refreshing, the whistling sometimes tires and takes on a life of its own, failing to blend in nicely with the beats and melody. Good try for a first attempt with this bizarre mix, but there is room for improvement.
