Robbie Williams | The ego has landed
Robbie Williams has been doing better since the split from
his previous band, Take That. He delivered two back-to-back
smashes, Life Through a Lens and I've Been Expecting You.The
latest album, The Ego has Landed contains six songs from Life
and eight from I've Been. It is not a perfect compilation, but
it's not half-bad, either. Since the compilation is culled
from just two records, it fails to be a cohesive album, the
way that Life Through a Lens is a dynamic, irresistible pop
confection.
The Ego Has Landed doesn't have that momentum or pacing,
but it does contain a very good cross-section of the two albums,
leaning a little toward the mid-tempo and ballad side. The pacing
is a little off, but the songs are there: the clever showmanship
of "Let Me Entertain You," the endearingly silly "Old Before I Die,"
the crooning "No Regrets," the propulsive "Man Machine," and "Millennium,"
and personal favourite “She’s the One”. Willliams shows that he is a
perfect post-alternative, post-Brit pop, post-ironic pop star. Which
is reason enough for the curious to pick up The Ego Has Landed, and it
may be enough for hardcore Asian fans to seek out the disc, since it
contains nearly all the hits.
