Long before R and B groups like Destiny’s Child and TLC
came into the picture, three females from San Francisco
have been dominating the airwaves. It has been three years
since their last album release, the second since singer Dawn
Robinson left the foursome to make En Vogue the
trio it is today. But the girls maintain the tight and distinctive
vocals which have been present all throughout their career
spanning since the previous decade. However, while their previous hits had dashes of rock in them, melodies
and chord progressions from classical music are brought together
to form "Masterpiece Theatre".Tchaikovsky's
"Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" in "Love You Crazay",
while Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" is present in the
ballad "Sad But True".
En Vogue’s sounds and image have influenced
other R and B singers like Jade and SWV; and
they continue to create the template for up and coming black
girl groups with their style and uncommon elegance. While
En Vogue does not feel the pressure to regain the crown
from the Billboards, their album looks a promising one.
