The departure of co-founder and drummer Bull Berry has definitely affected R.E.M.'s release, resulting in a comparatively more subdued and perhaps what we can deem as more introspective. We can probably trace this to the departure, since it brought about a very low point in the lives of all three members, but ended up bringing the band musically closer together.
Probably the closest you'd be able to get to post-Bill days can be found in “Imitation of Life”, which was very nearly withdrawn from the album. Although a lot less noiser than what the band has always been known for, and therefore potentially quite disappointing to those used to their earlier sounds, “Reveal” does have its gems.
