Solace DJs, well known for their progressive sounds in the local club scene, began the first of four Saturday sets on the 4th of November with DJs Benny and Kang Yee as they took control at the decks from 7pm to 10pm.
Throughout the three hour set, both DJs alternated between the decks, providing a smooth transition of progressive sounds. Benny, who was among those who pioneered the Solace movement, has been spinning for two years now. Having spun at Nox, Spiritz, Fluid and Tai', he feels it is important for him to like what he plays. Progressive (house) is a very intelligent form of music, it ranges from being creative to emotional, very much like landscaping.
This being his hobby, Benny finds it very hard to juggle between his job and managing Solace. I have to liase with organizations besides my personal practice on the decks besides other things, and since I only have the evening to work with, it can get rather taxing. But in the end, after an event is done, it is the satisfaction which drives me on.
He also feels Singapore can be exposed more to the underground culture. There is a huge influx of sub-quality trance, and it is getting quite out of hand. Besides Nox and Zouk, there aren't that many clubs helping to 'educate' Singaporeans, especially since there is no radio to help support the underground culture.
Kang Yee first started out in Solace when he was introduced by his friend, a member of the progressive club. Like Benny, he finds it hard to maintain his hobby as a DJ, especially when his full time job tires him out most of the time. But he still manages to find some time in the dead of the night to practice this unique form of art.
Both DJs, however, are hoping that more people will catch onto progressive music. More people seem to like techno, which can be rather dead, Kang Yee muses, while Benny agrees, It's a pity there aren't as many clubs which champion progressive music; but the styles are changing, we are looking at a fusion of other styles now.
With more Solace DJs coming to the Vivamusic Hub for the month of November, let's hope Singaporeans will be more interested in progressive sounds. Watch out for DJs Peng and Galvin on the 11th of November at the Hub!
