After a long absence of DJs since the G2 session by Groove Genetics in December to make way for the Christmas dedications last year, James and Kennerve came together for a 2-hour set on the 13th of January which saw different styles merging into one.
Kennerve, who had spun in the Hub during the G2 sessions before, came back for his second session here, from 7pm to 8pm. Although he had started spinning four years ago, he had only become serious about a year before, obtaining his influence from friends who were interested in this form of art.
Describing his style as progressive house, with a bit of techno, Kennerve has spun at Nox, Primal Groove and Suede (Sluice), and finds his interest in progressive stemming from the notion that it keeps people moving and wanting more. You find people looking forward to progressive sets. Although he listens to other genres of dance music, progressive remains on the top of the list for him, maintaining it as his specialty.
James, on the other hand, finds it hard to describe his particular style of music as he spins everything from house to hip hop, all into one. Self expression and all genres of music have one thing in common - they have a beat, so why separate them? he reasons.
His spinning stint began in 1994, with influences from Moby as well as a particular DJ from a well known club. Under the stage name Gay Mustha Jay, he has spun on the album of The Bored Phucks, Banned in the Singapura (Let's jog your memory a lil' here, shall we? Remember the song, Zoe Tay?). He is also one half of Silicon Sounds, a duo which believes in all genres of music rather than pigeon-holing themselves into House or Progressive, for example. In our sets you'll see a mix of everything. You could call us very experimental; I would call us self expression.
So how did Kennerve and James get together for their set? He was an old friend of mine, so I just called him for a jam and it was a pretty good one too, he remarked, spinning from 8pm to 9pm right after Kennerve's set.
Working from home (we are looking at a man who is in the computer line), James finds much ease with finding time to spin. With his counterpart, DJ NOName will be coming to the Hub soon for another. Look out for a session with many sounds rolled into one from the duo Silicon Sounds at the Vivamusic Hub soon.
