In the last dance segment for October, Infused Productions in conjuction with Frontallabs.com presented DJs Itchii and Gerald spinning at the Vivamusic Hub from 7pm to 10pm on the 21st of the month.
DJ Itchii, who had spun in the Hub before, was back for his second set in Cineleisure where he worked with DJ Gerald this time round. A mix of progressive funky techno with Itchii's signature disco house and progressive trance was evident throughout the three hour set which ended at 10pm. A first for the duo, this gig was a test of combining the different tastes, tracks and mixes and learning to work as a team, much like the Chemical Brothers and Sasha and John Digweed.
Gerald, who was influenced by the vivacious night scene in Melbourne while he was studying there, started out going to gigs and warehourse parties. As the passion (and the influence of electoronic music) became more overwhelming, he began to spin in various clubs in Melbourne three years ago, including sets on Australian dance radio stations like Kiss 90FM and PBS Radio. Back in Singapore, his sounds were heard in Nox and Primal Booth, where the difference in crowd response was obvious.
The people in Melbourne are more open minded and very responsive, even if they have never heard of the tracks. Perhaps this is because Singapore is not as exposed to the dance culture, since there is no radio station in Singapore which plays such underground music.
Although Gerald is back in Singapore to complete his national service, he is open to the comcept of going overseas to pursue his interest, especially since he has experience spinning in Australia before. But he hopes to become an electronic producer and write his own tracks one day, finding the latter an expensive interest to upkeep.
Performing alongside him, DJ Having spun at pubs like Nox and Sluice besides private parties and other inhouse gigs, Itchi has been working on his art for more than a year, beginning last July. With Deep Dish as one of his major influences, Itchi intends to hone his spinning skills further, maintaining it as an interest more than anything else.
Both DJs hail from Frontallabs.com, a non-profit site which hopes to gain awareness for up and coming local and foreign DJs. They provide a wide range of information tidbits for aspiring talents and listeners alike. With both their local and overseas contacts, Frontallabs.com hopes to bring more exposure to the local scene.
Although not without glitches, the set proved to be an interesting one, with both DJs playing around with the different genres and tracks. Perhaps this is the beginning of tag-teams which have yet to gain popularity in the scene.
