Friday evening at the Vivamusic Hub saw yet another two promising DJs with a passion for breakbeats at the turntables from 6pm to 9pm, showcasing the different angles of dance music which have the potential to be explored further, given the exposure and support in the country.
The recent Plastiq/Perspective gig by Renovations Productions at Nox last month saw DJ Yanbin at the turntables alongside Darkus and Witzbold, and this year's DMC champion J-Style in Plastiq . It is this personal passion coupled with a drive for perfection that brings this NUS student up the turntables, beginning his set of breakbeats at 6pm.
Choosing his Chinese name as his stage name, Yanbin had learnt the basics from his friends before moving on to becoming a self-taught DJ, practicing at home for an hour each day. Besides the Plastiq gig last month, Yanbin had also completed a successful spinning session for Sirens in Phuture two weeks ago. Describing the feeling as good, especially since it is my first Saturday set, Yanbin is not one to have a regular spinning spot. Since I do this out of interest, I only spin once in one or two months, normally during gigs rather than a residency case. His passion for such a genre largely based on personal preference, he has no intentions to make this his career at the moment, wanting instead to enjoy it as an interest activity rather than a professional one.
With DJ Wayne taking over the reins at 7.30pm, the sounds soon included more vocals and progressive elements like Rabbitweed by Sasha and Belfast by Sasha vs The Light, shifting the mood to lighter sounding breakbeats compared to the earlier set.
Also a full time student at NUS, Wayne prefers to mix breakbeats with other genres like progressive and techno to provide more variety in his sets. Starting out as a regular clubber, his interest in clubbing has developed to more than the role of an audience, starting out as a bedroom DJ about half a year ago. Citing Zouk and Phuture resident DJs Tony Tay, Aldrin and Jonathan Yeo as his influences, he is also listening to Sasha and Dave Seaman's CDs for more inspiration, making it a point to practice twice a day, one and a half hours each time.
As a budding DJ, Wayne has no plans to move on professionally, preferring to keep spinning as a hobby for now, although he is keeping an open mind to other possible options.
Ending his set just before 9.30pm, DJ Wayne hopes to gain more experience through spinning for more gigs and events. Let's hope we see more of DJs Yanbin and Wayne in local events to come.
